Google to launch OS that competes with Windows
Google announced the Google Chrome Operating System -- a Linux-based OS that competes directly with Microsoft Windows. Although the operating system will appear first on netbooks, Google says the software "is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems."
Google claims the OS won't have some of Windows' more annoying features, such as slow boot times, cumbersome user interface, or vulnerability to "viruses, malware and security updates."
"It should just work," says Google.

And you are certainly skeptic about it, right? Being a Microsoft fanboy, you probably think some stuff like "Linus is not mature", "open source / free software is amateurish software" and so on.
Oh, dear. If you could ever know Microsoft's dirty history, you'd see that Windows dominance on the market comes from opportunism, betrayal, illegal and immoral trade practices and forcing up ad-hoc laws down people's throats to ensure compliance. "Competence" was the one thing that didn't matter in the process -- and it shows.
Hope Googles takes on the market without resorting to such dirty tricks and respecting FOSS ideology and motives. It'd be good for a change. I don't bet on it, though.
gotta love linux
Easier said than done.
But good luck to them, competition usually makes the market better.
So we invite everybody to speculate on the outcome of the battle 'Google Chrome OS-Windows'. Is Google going to knock Microsoft down? Or Windows will never be defeated as the most popular OS? Tell us - http://www.votetheday.com/software/google-chrome-os-kills-windows-431/
Why bother arguing over whether or not this new OS will dominate the market when we'll see in just a few months? After all, the Chrome OS is supposed to come out THIS YEAR: http://www.marketnewsvideo.com/?id=200907GOOG070809&mv=1
Personally, I'm not in suspense.
A very tough competition. This is basically a very big news for microsoft which has been fearing a launch of google mobile phone
for years.
I would definitely love to run this chrome OS on a netbook prior to using it on microsoft OS.
"Compete" is an overstatement. I don't think Microsoft has anything to worry about. Chrome OS won't completely replace windows. No alternative operating system ever will unless hardware manufacturers all start making drivers and software for alternative os's like linux and we all know that's not going to happen anytime soon.
Sounds like a great os, but I don't think they will ever get a significant percentage of the market.
The 4GB SD card makes the price of an android cell phone really worth it! Hats off...
