Jim Olen was saying exactly this after his house was caught in the last wave of fires : http://twitter.com/Dreamented - it's not a bad idea.
Personally I get these vague inklings of an emergent morality - where we're bound by a kindof unspoken inter-geek obligation to digitise everything. I went on about it here http://www.genomicon.com/2009/04/emergent-morality-2-set-thine-information-free/ a while back - partly due to my Mum attempting to throw out some old photographs and partly because of Tim Berners Lee's impassioned plea for us to set our information free.
Backing up your physical stuff is quite a chore though I think. You could probably make a million dollars dreaming up a way to automate it.
