Dell Now Charges $150 Extra for Windows XP
Dell has been periodically increasing the additional price for new systems with Windows XP, and now it's up to a whopping $150. No, that's not the total amount they charge for XP. That's what you pay after paying for the copy of Vista that you don't want. Stated another way, that's the penalty Microsoft and Dell charge you to punish you for not switching to Mac OS and Apple when you want to avoid Microsoft's hideous Vista OS. Is it any wonder Microsoft's OS market share has dropped to below 90% for the first time in 15 years? (props to Silicon Valley Insider)

Comments:
All Microsoft needs to do is discontinue XP. Force everyone to Vista, which means buying a new pc - and forget trying that crazy expanding netbook market.
And let Apple and Linux chew up market share.
Or admit the problem, get 7 out quick, and stop the excessive $150 fee.
Dell and other computer OEMs do offer models with Linux pre-installed (or go to www.distrowatch.com to choose your own).
I run Vista 64bit and I don't have any issues. Why do you think someone needs to learn a new OS (OSx) to avoid Vista?
why do you knock vista it is a ood system and better then xp
dont get attacked like idid with xp and vista is ok when u get used to ti and it s a lot better.
Vista actually isn't that bad at all. I bought a Dell laptop on black friday, and got it last week, and Vista runs pretty well. It's pretty clean too. After installing SP1, it's not that bad and I haven't had any troubles.
There is one thing I can complain about Vista. Their idea of splitting Vista's functionality into "Home Premium" vs "Business" vs "Ultimate" vs "Enterprise" is retarded. They inherently "crippled" Vista in the Home edition. For example, I can't switch my locality to French, Spanish, or another language. Everything is in English. Vista claims to have a "Multilingual User Interface" language pack I can install. But it's only allowed to be installed if you have Vista Ultimate or Windows XP with SP1. Go figure, XP isn't crippled, but Vista is. I have to shell out an additional $150 just to install something that will let my parents use the PC in their native language.. lame.
Anyway, there is a hack available to install the language packs (and I did this), but I'm not too happy that I had to circumvent Microsoft's intentional crippling of the operating system.
hideous? please.
and where in the original article does it say MS was behind this?
Mike you lose a bit of credibility spouting such craziness, Vista works just fine. Does it have addt'l hardware requirements, or have had issues when it was first released? Sure. I've been using it for months, its works very well.
