Why Netbooks Will Soon Cost $99
Netbooks like the Asus Eee PC, the Dell Mini 9 and the HP 2133 Mini-Note will soon cost $99. The catch? You'll need to commit to a two-year mobile broadband contract, just like your cell phone. Why so low? 1) the economy; 2) the cell phone sales crash; 3) the netebook explosion; 4) the netbook glut; 5) the netbook's Internet dependency; 6) the backlash against 3G; and 7) MOORE'S LAW! NOTE: This story has been SLASHDOTTED!

I like the price but not the contract, I know you are a proponent of getting carriers to make data plans a better value, here is my idea; Make your cell phone your own personal portable WiFi hot spot. http://bensviewpoint.blogspot.com/2008/11/you-cant-take-it-with-you.html
If they can shove a camera in my phone why not a router?
Naw, not quite yet. Maybe in a few years. The US operators don't have the infrastructure to support it quite yet. Just the iPhone has pushed AT&T's 3G to the limit, so I don't think they will be pushing netbooks for awhile. Plus, I think the monthly access fees would negate the value of the netbook. @ $50 a month, the $600 spent on the access fees is twice what a netbook costs retail. Most wireless data is getting capped @ 5GB a month that's $10 a gigbyte. I don't need a internet browser that hits me up for $10 a gig. Plus, the addition of another $50 a month to my wireless bill would make it close to 2K a year to my carrier. I really don't like them that much. I get the same speed and data from adding my blackberry as a modem for $5 extra a month!
Been done already....

If only these netbooks had a Firewire port they would make a perfect direct-to-disc video recorder for my video cameras. Most DV cameras have a Firewire output, not USB. I shoot performances with multiple cameras and have to bring all the tapes in to the PC, which is done in real time.
80GB standalone recorders cost around $1000. For the price of one standalone unit I could get two or almost three netbooks. I could put a netbook with each camera and run the video directly to an external USB drive. Plus I could use the LCD as a monitior instead of the typical 3" LCD on the camera.
Maybe someday.
