Will Apple's 'Brick' Be an All-Screen Laptop?

Cult of Mac blogger and author Leander Kahney says he's hoping that Apple's upcoming product, code-named "brick," will be a LAPTOP SIMILAR IN CONCEPT TO THE OLPC v2. The idea would be that instead of a keyboard and touchpad, the bottom half of the clamshell would be another touch screen. So you open it out flat for tablet mode, use it in two-user mode, hold it like a book for e-book mode, or just use it like a laptop with the keyboard appearing on the touch screen. As Leander says, the chances of this are "slim" -- I personally think it'll be a tablet with a more sophisticated version of the iPhone UI. But wouldn't that be cool if they really did it? UPDATE: Now a ZD blog is running a poll: Would YOU buy an all-screen laptop?

Cool idea. Not sure about the touch screen keyboard, which would probably cause the product to flop.

The fake Apple pics are so good now, that it is hard to tell the real ones from the fake ones.

Time will tell.

It has to be something unique so it can't be a tablet or even the "all-screen" foldup laptop, Apple is the root of all innovation. Before the Apple there were no personal computers. Before Mac there were no GUIs (just ask Xerox). Before the iPod there were no hard drive-based MP3 players (well, except for the ones I had). Before the iPhone you couldn't do email or surf the web on a smart phone (I certainly haven't been doing THAT for nearly the past decade on devices from my P800 through my Blackberry). They also invented Visual Voicemail, a feature that lets voicemail look like an email message. Before all we had was Unified Messaging, but that's different. It also lets faxes look like emails...

On the plus side it'll probably have a sleek design and luckily the competition in the PC world that is so stifled in the Mac world can adopt and improve upon the flaws.

I like the idea of a touchscreen keypad. Wouldn't that be great? It would be easy to wipe clean with a papertowel and Windex, and what we be super-cool if they build in software that allows you to rearrange the keyboard anyway you want...like having all the keys mirror the alphbet, or to slide over some special character or foreign language key you need to use all the time. There is no reason why they can't sell keyboards that do that now, but they don't, so go figure....
