Normal-Looking Cell Phone Does 3G, Satellite
A company called Elektrobit demonstrated a Windows Mobile phone that connects to Wi-Fi when it can, AT&T's 3G network when it can't and to a satellite network when it must. In other words, it gives you connectivity indoors, outdoors, in cities, on mountaintops and in the middle of the ocean. And, look, ma... NO VISIBLE ANTENNA!

Comments:
Almost there, but a coverage map for Terrestar and a quote from ICO with ambiguous coverage information suggests that satellite coverage is only in the US market at this time. When they can talk to an Iridium-class network with worldwide coverage I'll ditch my monstrous 9505A.
Visible antennas are irrelevant. No cell phone has needed a visible antenna for years; manufacturers include them because some people think they're important and will only buy a phone with a visible antenna, and even then, some have been dummy antennas. The manufacturers are beginning to exclude visible antennas because they're tired of dealing with customers who break them.
Cell phones haven't used them for years, but take a look at the satellite phones in the link above to figure out why it's amazing that there's no visible antenna
