Man Who Faked Rare-Tiger Photo Jailed

I told you in November about how Chinese farmer Zhou Zhenglong faked a photo of a tiger thought to be extinct. (He took a picture of another picture in a popular calendar, then Photoshopped it (probably with a counterfeit copy of Photoshop...) to look like the extinct tiger.) Authorities accepted his claim, and actually gave him a smaller reward, but once his pictures were posted online, hundreds of people exposed the pictures as fake by putting them side-by-side with the calendar photos. Zhenglong was apparently trying to collect a $146,000 reward offered for anyone who could prove the tiger was still around. But now, he's been SENTENCED to two and a half years in prison.

Two and a half years? For faking a foto? Thats a bit steep don't you think? Thirty days in jail and paying the money back sounds better. Or just paying the money back and doing a public apology followed by some community work.

I agree with pirilampo. However if the guy broke into somebodies home or a bank to steal the money, then I agree with John Galt that 2.5 years would seem okay. But to try to trick a panel who is awarding a prize, well, I don't call that stealing, instead that is committing public fraud (in this case on a small scale). He tricked people into believing his photo was real. I too think that 2.5 years is too steep. I hope they let him out sooner and he can go to work teaching people how to use Photoshop (bootleg-of course!)

Two and a half years sounds good to me. It's not so much about his fraudulent act, as a deterrent for someone else to try and attempt to get away with something like this in the future. No need to be so greedy.
