China's 'Culture of Fake' On Display At Olympics
I've written a lot on this blog about China's "culture of fake" -- the widespread creation of fake cell phones, cars, drugs and other products. Now, the "just fake it" solution is being used to create the impression of perfection at the Olympics. First, we learned, that the impressive "footprints in the sky" opening ceremony fireworks were computer-generated, and inserted into the live video feed. Then, journalists have discovered the existence of "not-so-great walls of China" that have been built to hide ugly neighborhoods. Now, it turns out, that cute little girl who "sang" at the Olympics was a lip-syncing actress, because the real girl (who won a nationwide singing contest) was considered too ugly by a Communist Party big shot. There are many other credible acusations of Chinese cheating at the Olympics. The tragedy is that the opening ceremonies were amazing, Beijing is impressive, and Chinese athletes are awesome. All that faking and cheating diminishes, rather than enhances, China's image.

Comments:
Communist Party big shot? Dude you have to take a chill pill don't you think? You are such a GI..
I agree. I am very turned off by all the things that are now being turned up on China now.
Interesting stories about misrepresentation of China during the Olympics. Not so sure America wouldn't do similar things, but that doesn't make it not fake. Hopefully China learns about the value of transparency. :)
Great set of links here. Thanks!
That's cool, check out this mobility scooter I bought my mom for Christmas.
http://www.travelscoot.com
It is called TravelScoot mobility scooter and it folds up like an umbrella and weighs just 35 lbs. She keeps it in a carrying bag in her trunk. She takes it out anywhere.
The official Chinese citizens guide also suggests, to the local population, that women with unattractive ankles (meaning fat), should wear black stockings duing the Olympics so that visitors have a more favorable opinion of the Chinese.
It's really thought provoking about what other things China has been faking. Sometimes I seriously doubt their whole openness, happy people thing, because who really knows how oppressive their government is?
Eh, I can kind of understand wanting to put a nicer image on things, the real tragedy is this one girl will have to deal with the fact that she was "too ugly" to be seen.
Someone actually told a 7 year old girl she was too ugly. That's horrible.
I saw something earlier today that implied that the parade of cultures, representing people from the different ethnic groups of China, were, in fact, all from the Han majority.
