Why Can't the Brits Hang On To Their Gadgets?
An advisor to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown lost his BlackBerry while in China on an official visit with the prime minister. Was it a Chinese government "honeytrap"? The unnamed advisor was seduced by a Chinese woman who approached him in a disco in Shanghai. He went back to her apartment... yada, yada, yada... next morning his BlackBerry was gone. Some speculate that Chinese government spies stole the gadget as part of its Thousand Grains of Sand approach to stealing the secrets of other countries. 10 Downing Street says security wasn't compromised. But this is just the latest example of a UK government official losing a mobile device packed with secrets. According to a recent report, the UK Ministry of Defense has lost 747 laptops and 131 memory sticks since 2004 and the government as a whole has lost more than 1,500 laptops. Why can't the UK government HANG ON TO ITS MOBILE GADGETS?

Comments:
Because they get a free replacement brand new laptop and one of their friends/ relations gets their old one. Who cares - the government will just buy them another.
It is not just government. In large companies a similar attitude exists.
Budget won't pay for the latest executive toy? Just 'lose' the old one or accidentally drop it. Then the company *has* to get you a new one.
Until tracking devices are universal, loss or theft is just too easy.
Am I doing my math wrong because from your post the UK Ministry of Defense loses a laptop every couple of days since 2004 there has been about 1000 days if he loses 747 laptops that would work out to be about .75 laptops a day right?
If that is right then there is nothing to worry about because he would not have enough time to put anything on it that would put your country at risk.
