Are There Too Many Women in IT?
According to Gartner, the percentage of women in IT is low and shrinking, dropping from 42 percent in 1996 to 32.4 percent in 2004 worldwide. In some countries, including in the United States, it's below 30 percent.
This conspicuous gender imbalance is caused by a long list of problems, according to advocates of women in IT, including a lack of female role models, a pervasive stereotype of IT professionals as unfashionable "nerdy men," and workplace sexism.
I really don't know why more boys than girls choose to study IT, choose careers in IT and stay with IT once the career has started – and I confess I have no solution to offer. I'm sure stereotyping, sexism and other factors play a role. But I also believe that PRESSURING GIRLS - or boys, for that matter - into careers they won't like isn't helping anyone. Dangling false motives - such as role models and the countering of stereotypes - won't help anyone, either. They've got to love the machines, the systems and the act of complex-problem solving or they're unlikely to enjoy or succeed in IT.

Comments:
And probably more than half the women in "IT" are in some sort of management position, regardless of their qualifications.
In our IT dept, the gender split is right about 50/50. And in several sections, the women are actually far better overall than their male counterparts!
Overall in what? Looks? Bust size?:) Job know-how? What exactly? Our society has become anti-male where everyone thinks its okay to say that females do better than men in whatever, but men can't say that men are better than women in whatever. That is wrong. We should respect the differences between the genders and not downplay them. When it comes to computer gadgetry men are better because men seem to be hardwired to want to tinker with stuff. Women are not, but that does not mean that some women are not good with computers, but overall men are. Does this mean men are higher than women, no, it means we are diferent, and each side has its role in life. I am tired of womens groups and society trying to force girls into things they aren't really interested in. My big sister did that with her two daughters...forcing them to play with toy trucks and play softball (which is fine if my nieces actually wanted to) but they wanted to play with dolls and makeup, and that drove my sister nuts. She finally gave up after about 5 years of trying to force them into activities they were not interested in. Anyway...just my two cents....
Yes, it is not unfair to say that men and women, in general, think differently. Use each side of their brains differently. And this leads to each sex having, again in general, differnt skills that are better fits for differnt jobs. Again... in general. For individuals, milage may vary. But, the truth is that some people are just better at some jobs. For example - you are born to be an engineer or not. Few people can become engineers that are don't grow up wanting to be engineers.
Well, in our case, the women who are systems analysts (for example) are far better at that job than the guys. They are, as a whole, far better organized and the work they do is far better thought-out.
I dunno if this applied to all IT women, but it certainly applies to nearly every woman in our IT department.
Part of this may have to do with the "good ol' boys" mentality that some of our male analysts have - they've been in place for quite some time and have that entrenched, untouchable attitude that doesn't lend itself well to adopting new work styles or techniques. Change is the only constant in IT and, from what I've seen, women deal with that better.
Women in IT, and engineering, are almost always hired to fill quotas. Once in a while you get lucky and get one that really can do the job. And yes, if you find a female minority you can fill two quota slots and only have to carry one dead weight.
The opposite is true in professions like nursing.
Reality has a sad way of being politically incorrect.
