Thieves Use 'Craigslist Hoax' to Cover Tracks

A recent "Craigslist hoax" -- where someone posted a Craigslist item that said anyone could take anything from a Oregon home -- turns out to have been a diversion to cover the tracks of thieves. The crooks, Brandon and Amber Herbert, had come by the victim's house because it was advertised for rent. They apparently saw some horse saddles they wanted to steal, so they placed the ad, then joined the mob of people ransacking the joint. Unfortunately for the thieves, investigators TRACKED THE IP ADDRESS of the computer that placed the ad back to the Herbert's house, where cops found the computer and recovered deleted files that prove they placed the ad.

What I want to know is did people just show up at the place and break the door down while no one was home? What is to keep this from happening again? The people who entered the house uninvited were also breaking the law. What a sad day (among many) that something as helpful as Craig's List could be used for something this bad.

I just read the full article and how horrible to come home and find people taking your things. This could happen to anybody. How do you stop something like this from happening again? Who the f--k thinks that because something is posted on the web that it is true?

Did you know that in some countries they will chop off your hand for stealing? It's not barbaric, it's effective.

When you "delete" a file from your computer, it is not actually removed. The data is still on the disk and is simply marked as available to be overwritten.

If the files haven't yet been overwritten, you can "recover" them, as they are still actually on your hard drive.

To completely remove a file, you would have to wipe your hard drive.

you can just secure delete a file, that almost always works, but the ONLY 100% way is to destroy the hard drive.

or you could just use a fucking proxy.

also this is really funny; admit it.

You don't have to wipe the entire hard drive to prevent a file from being recovered. Choose "Secure Empty Trash" in the Finder.

Seriously, if you are going to go to the trouble of placing this kind of an ad, why wouldn't you simply wardrive to an open WiFi network and place it from there?

Not even wiping is that effective. After one wipe some pieces of software can even get your data back. After more than one wipe it takes hardware, but it's still possible. Research shows it takes at least 15 full writes (write all 0's then all 1's) before you can consider an HD completly clean. Anything less than that and they can use devices that physically remove a layer of magnetic material from a drive exposing the layer underneath it. Usually due to the properties of magnetics, the layer beneath is an opposite, a mirror. But yeah, even if they were deleted, disk commander would getem back. Then again Zilla Data Nuker might disagree.

Doesn't anybody up there use koork.com to check people's Craigslist feedback before responding to these ads?

Even a proxy server is traceable.

Instead use a computer physically located somewhere fairly far from home, certainly NOT your home computer. For example, use a kiosk at a library or an internet cafe.

I hope that this thief is really popular in jail for what he did, and that his wife gets thrown into one of those prisons like from that Linda Blair movie where she is "abused" by Sybil Danning. But instead of a Sybil Danning look-alike this dreadful she-thief gets a Rosanne Barr look-alike or shares a cell with a Rosie O'Donnell clone.

Craigslist requires the posting computer to accept cookies. I don't think most library computers do.
Also, the poster's e-address isn't visable on CL. So it would be difficult to look up on the Koors site.

I hate to say this... but if I saw either of them on the street, I would immediately know they just dont have a lot going on in their little brains.

I mean come on!!! In this day and age, there are so many public terminals. A person with even rudimentary knowledge would know better than to use their own computer and internet access.

I guess intelligence can't be stolen.

The problem of data recovery is cost. If you over write a hard drive six times the cost of scientists trying to recover the data will be like trying to buy the City of New York. The results are also likely to be poor. And the time it takes to recover that data will very likely exceed the statute of limitations for most crimes. And then you are still up against proving exactly who put the files on that computer.

While I don't disagree dd may do the job, what company is going to spend the time and money to attempt this for $40 and the hard drive? Not to mention the $60 and shipping both ways.
Even if it can be done, no one is going to waste thier time to lose $20+ to do it.
