Lamest Security Gadget Yet: GPS Tracker Defense
The GPS Tracker Defense will disable any GPS tracking device within range. It does this by disabling any GPS gadget's ability to connect with satellites -- INCLUDING YOUR OWN! Its limited, 16-foot range guarantees that trackers will be safe, while your own GPS is disabled. The GPS Tracker Defense has the exact same effect as simply turning off your GPS.

Comments:
The 16 foot range should be enough to disable a surripticiously installed vehicle mounted tracker or the GPS tracker in a car rental vehicle. So, it isn't entirely pointless.
But, if the cig lighter power switches off when you turn off the car, the GPS will be able to get a fix.
Yes, I can simply turn off the OnStar GPS vehicle tracking and logging system.
Not lame, just a niche market. Please think about your headlines a bit before writing them. We expect better from you.
I can think of lots of uses.
Car thieves / carjackers
Terrorists
Drug dealers / runners
Teenagers / cheating spouses
All would have a reason to want to disable any GPS unit (or cell phone with a GPS unit) within a car (built-in or surreptitiously hidden). It allows a car to pretty much disappear from the grid of any real-time tracking.
Mike, I like your headlines, they are funny, you make play on words, and you write your mind. It's your blogg and I read it because I enjoy reading YOUR point of view. The only thing I would ever critize on your blog is if you were to make grammatical/spelling mistakes, because as a professional writer you are fair game when it comes to this. But when it comes to people making comments, I don't fret about their mistakes because people leaving comments on blogs write like they talk, which is okay, but when they leave their manners behind...well..that I don't like... Anyway...keep up the good work! I enjoy your blog!
This is a clever device, and it does have some valid applications.
Question - don't cell phones with "global positioning capability" usually actually rely on triagulation between cell towers and not GPS satellites? In other words, would not this sort of quasi-GPS tracking, which is fairly common, would still work?
It's amazing what they (whoever "they" are) can do with a cigarette lighter. However wouldn't it just be easier if cars had a regular jack outlet?

Some phones (Nokia N95 for ex) have proper integrated GPS

What's the point? Aside from GPS paranoia? But whatever, there's nuts everywhere. Although with a 16ft range this is capable of disabling someone else's GPS, and I would consider that illegal activity. Jamming laws? Other people might be afraid of GPS, but I'm not.
Currently I am being stalked by a ex police officer who uses planted GPS devices to follow my vehicals.
People are using GPS tracking to violate personal security and this device will help.
