Killing XP: Microsoft's Fatal Error Message
On June 30, Microsoft will do something quite ordinary -- the company will stop selling a 7-year-old old product. Microsoft has killed off many versions of Windows in the past. But there's a difference with the retirement of Windows XP: Most users HATE WINDOWS VISTA.

Comments:
I guess this all depends on what proportion of Windows users even know what Linux is, let alone if they can switch to it. Over two decades of unregulated monopoly have meant that this isn't your average free market situation.
Learn to love Vista. I am trying. There are many things I don't like about Vista, and there are many things I do like! But since we are stuck with it, and yes we are because even though I also have a new iMac, it is still a Windows world out there. So, I have a few pointers to make: Love Vista on new computers and generic home-made systems (like the Shuttle). But don't love it on older computers where the manufacturer does not provide native Vista drivers (like a three-year old Sony Vaio) because it won't work and will drive you nuts. Vista is overpriced and there are too many versions, if Microsoft lowered its price and simplified it to two versions, home and pro, then I think that the public might learn to love it. Oh, and simplify the Control Panel. Under XP the Diplay Settings was perfect, but under Vista the Personalize Settings are incredible convoluted. Anyway...I am trying to learn to love it!
Once again your comments are directed to the top 5% - the tech crowd - and not the masses. Most people get vista automatically when they buy their PC and don't know the difference.
You are totally correct, most shoppers wouldn't know the diference between XP and Vista on a new computer unless it bit them on the youknowwhat...But remember, Mike List and Raw Feed readers ARE the top 5% of the crowd! And we geeks love being there!
Windows is a much better operating system then Vista. IT's faster, subject to less errors, and has the most driver support. To buy into Microsoft Vista because of its nicer display is a waste of money. Apples' Leopard is a much better operating system and stable. I recently purchased a quad Intel 6600 system with 4 Gigs of memory, loaded my Windows XP Pro with not one problem
I have been useing Vista for 14 months on three computers and all is A OK and never had a problem!
NO blue screen of death nothing and have got all drives to what ever to work on my printers to games!
It's who installs vista and keep in mine it's not XP!
I like what it can do and is all I have now to use!
Some do not like change!
Some do not like Microsoft!
Some do not know what they are doing!
and keep in mind you do need 1gig of memory** two gigs is best:
Linux does not work every place!
Linux does not like some blogs or window apps:
been there done that I will use Vista as I have been and it's used at my work also with NO problems!
*Beta is a testing* some one said the service pack #1 for vista is NO good! Yrue it's not out yet but soon he or she downloaded a testing of the service pack!
Beta is just what it means testing live and does not mean it's all working A OK:
Stick with what works as I do and leave the testing to the testers!
Why the service pack is ready you will get it sent to you!
My two cents:
Ken
Ok city
Hah. Love the graphic.
Me, I bought a Mac just after Christmas. I needed a new laptop, the features were good, and the cost for an equivalent machine with Vista was just as high, but the quality on the Mac seemed better. 4 months later I'll say that so far I'm delighted with it. As to switching operating systems, I've used GEM, GEOS, Mac Classic, Linux, Solaris, DOS, CPM, etc. so it wasn't a problem once I'd figured out how to right click, for someone with less experience it would be harder.
