How to Use GPS Underwater

Scuba diving GPS enthusiasts have figured out how to USE GPS UNDERWATER -- despite the fact that GPS signals can't penetrate water. First, they place standard handheld GPS gadgets inside waterproof containers. Then, they tether them. While diving, when the want to know where in the world they are, they simple allow the devices to float to the surface and remain there for a minute or two. Then, they reel them back down and read the location. (props to CrunchGear and Hack A Day)

The photo is one I took a few years ago when describing my deploy and recover method (as seen in Underwater Magazine). The laltest adaptation of the method can be found on Youtube by searching "underwater gps".
