If they had another ending, this doesn't surprise me at all. The ending they used sucked.
I've not seen the alternate ending, but I have read a synopsis of the book. The original story, as is often the case, is much more interesting (and more complicated) than the movie. It shows the other side of the story - from the afflicted people's point of view.
I actually thought the movie, in this case, was more interesting and better than the book. It's just my taste, though. The alternate ending was cool, and I think they both work.
