Tag, Release Your Toddler With Tracking System

In-Reach Child Tracking System lets you TAG AND RELEASE your child into the yard. One device is lashed to junior -- it tracks his or her proximity to (or escape from) a parentally determined 10- to 300-foot boundary. The other device is carried by the parent, and shows where the kid is at all times. The child unit even has a "panic button" (in case the ice cream truck comes and the tot wants mom to run out in a hurry). It costs $44.95. (props to The Red Ferret Journal)

What happens when you push the panic button? No matter what, the evolution of this technology is scary. Big brother is creeping.

If you can't pay enough attention to your child visually what makes you think you will be able to pay attention to this device, especially if you are on your iPhone!

Actually, I work for "big brother" and let me tell you that the tracking systems are not as sophisticated as the movies will lead you to believe. I've been trying to get everyone on board with a child tracking program for some time now, and the amount of resistance, even internally, is huge. Just imagine if we could put chips in our kids and ,then if your kid was missing, you could enable the amber alert system that would enable all speedpass stations on our interstates into instant checkpoints to locate your kid. I think it is a good idea, but the rest of the security community doesn't. It will be a LONG time before we ever see big brother/big government tracking systems...so I guess my point is...Don't be so paranoid, big brother has better things to do than watch you.

Ohh I think it's a decent enough idea. You can't always keep a clear line of sight on your kids - such as at a playground with a jungle gym. With this device, you'll know if your kid has wandered away too far, or taken.

When my son was born one of the gifts we received was a harness and leash. At first my wife wasn't sure she liked the idea of it at all...at 7 months my son started walking, and at 9 months started running. Being able to put his leash on and 'tie' him to the stroller made going out and shopping with him so much easier. This sounds like a great idea to me, and I am sure for $45, they will sell thousands of them. If they can drop the production costs and integrate them into clothing for toddlers they will be raking in the dough!!Have one "base" station, and then sync the clothing with it. even if it added $5 to the cost of the clothes, there would be a big market for it.

Another excuse for not really looking after your kid properly.

Everyone who accepts technology like this for children out of fear of losing them is a short sighted, naive, and easily manipulated fool.

Things like this are NOT good and will steer society in an accepting direction of a loss of freedom.

I can't wait till these things display ads around your childrens necks and carry a monthly fee to be signed up to an international tracking system.

How about watching and raising your kid instead?

This is a horrible device in so many ways.
Firstly it makes parents of, like, 3 year olds think, they have an alternative to watching their child. Abduction etc. is a remote danger. Falling down stairs in an unlucky way, choking on something, angering wasps, eating something they shouldn't ... that are the real dangers, and keeping your toddler within so many feet of your house does not do anything for safety.

Secondly, and that has to do with applying it to older children, it interferes with growth. We grow adults, not by growing big and by hormone changes but by gradually taking control of our lives over from our parents. Such a tracker is yet another tool of those, who want to make growing up a one day event on the 18th birthday. It doesn't work that way.

To the guy who has a toddler on a leash: I think, you are joking, but if you aren't, let me tell you this: NEVER EVER leave a restrained person alone in a room even for a short time. It is extremely dangerous.

Might be prudent to add a self-inflating flotation device if you have a pool and are just too busy to keep your damn eyes on your kid.
