How Big Is the Web? 155,583,825 Sites - Report

A January Netcraft survey estimates that there were last month 155,583,825 WEB SITES ON THE INTERNET. Two other interesting data points: 1) Growth had slowed from 5.4 million new sites in December to just 354,000 new sites in January; and 2) Apache serves, which have been in the lead but suffering a long decline has been surging lately, and at the expense of Microsoft.

You're thinking of billions of pages. They're talking about sites.

which are active domain names, I don't think they are counting subdomains of a site (e.g. adwords.google.com)

***** Technorati tracks 112 million blogs *****

They're probably counting top-level domains. For example, all blogs hosted on blogspot.com, for example, are together just one site.

the ansewr is that they are using MANY servers whit bots that youst runs trough every site it can find.
but there is a way you wont show up. in a domain you got a fle called robot.txt the bot must follow its instrukts.

look at this this are some sites that will not be sowed:
www.whitehouse.gov/robots.txt
look at url (ยค=]

I personally think its believable though depending on the definition of a "website". Cause if you think about it, websites could mean domain names right?
If websites like:
www.geocities.com/example1
www.geocities.com/example2
www.geocities.com/example3

are all differently owned, but under the same name of geocities, the counter might count this as one site with multiple pages. Cause there's only a limited amount of server hosts out there right?

But yea if each of those websites listed above are counted individually, then I think this page number is way too little.
