Made-In-China Boombox Catches Fire, Recalled
Coby DVD boombox models TF-DVD170 and TF-DVD176 DVD sold between May 2006 and October 2007, which are manufactured in -- where else? -- China, have been recalled because they CATCH FIRE. (props to Engadget)

Comments:
Yeah, lets bomb China for this, because no other product has ever caught on fire before.
You're right, one flaming boombox isn't newsworthy. If you read for a while you'll notice that "Chinese xxx recalled today" comes up a lot - individually they're meaningless but then a pattern develops. I'm surprised that I don't think I saw a reference here to the date rape drugs in children's toys that came up recently. That's OK, after the recall happened and no one was buying the toys, China halted shipments of the toys no one wanted anymore...
I'm confused by your "let's bomb China" comment, Anonymous #1. As Anonymous #2 says, dangerous products is a huge issue right now.
It's really amazing. Just check out the current stories on unsafe products from China currently in the news.
The reason I posted this one was that it was yet another unsafe product, but almost everyone covering it failed to mention its Chinese origin -- only The China Post mentioned it.

I get regular emails from the CPSC regarding manufacturer's recalls and at least 95% of them concern items manufactured in China. We now buy as little of the "Made in China" failurees as possible.
One news report I heard had a comment from a representative of a toy industry association of some sort, who said that the total number of recalls this year is not significantly higher than in the past, but it looks bad for China, because basically all toys are manufactured there now. I am not sure what to believe. You can prove almost anything with statistics.
