Cigarette Machine Won't Sell to Young Faces

A Japan-based vending machine company and Fujitaka Company have collaborated on a cigarette machine that uses FACE-RECOGNITION SOFTWARE to judge the age of people buying cigarettes. If the buyer looks too young, it asks for a license. If the photo on the licence matches the face in front of the machine's camera, it will sell the cigarettes if the license holder is old enough. How long before reports come out of youngsters "hacking" it (since this is the term the media uses for young people using technology for other than its intended purpose) by holding up a photo of their dad?

A new breed of masks could be on the horizon to make it easier for the kids to show an older face! I see an investment opportunity. :-)

Since face recognition is both unreliable and easy to fool I expect these machines to become common hacking and vandalism targets. Clever kids will fool it the dumber or more destructive ones or even adults who were denied their nicotine fix might vandalize it.
On verifying with the license wither this will work most of the time depends if it just reads the 2d bar code this always works but can be duplicated easily or tries to match the license picture to that of the user which will not work most of the time yet still can be duplicated even with less difficulty then the 2d bar code.
Also don't say smart card based ID as you can buy a smartcard reader writer for $35 off ebay and ID type cards tend to be very old technology ie thoroughly cracked and dirt cheap.
I expect this product to turn out a sizable financial loss of the involved companies.
The software company involved in making the face recognition software might even end up folding nothing like bad PR to kill a company.
