Terrorist Weapon of Choice: Google Earth

Palestinian terrorists actively use Google Earth to plan ROCKET ATTACKS ON ISRAEL. Such attacks have killed about a dozen people in the past three years. Video on the linked page shows an al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade member using Google Earth to find targets.

Imagine if we didn't live in our world of Internet. Would there be a similar uproar if the terrorist weapon of choice was Rand Mcnally maps and the Encyclopedia Britannica?

The Israelis use something they're capable of inventing and building themselves, no doubt (unlike the Islamo-fascists, who couldn't even create the mouse).

MORE ISLAMIC INNOVATION
FOUNTAIN PEN
In the tenth century, the first reservoir pen was created for an Egyptian sultan called al-Mu'izz. The idea was to design a pen that would write only when the writer so chose and would not leave unwanted inky stains .

CAMERA OBSCURA

Edinburgh has its own famous example, but the camera obscura was invented by Ibn al-Haitham (born in the tenth century), who noticed light coming through a hole in shutters which made an upside-down image on the opposite wall. This discovery led to today's camera (the name of which comes from the Arabic word qamara).

SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS

Al-Zahrawi was an 11th-century surgeon who was literally on the cutting-edge. He pioneered many surgical tools.

EXECUTIVE TOYS

The Rubik's Cube may be having a renaissance, but it is predated by the "trick devices" created by the three Banu Musa brothers in the ninth century. All were accomplished mathematicians and part of the House of Wisdom, a famous scientific academy in Baghdad between the eighth and 14th centuries.

It is amazing what a society can do when it isn't run on tribal fanaticism and religious superstition. Look what the Arabs created back in the day when reason and tolerance ruled as the mainstay of their culture. What happens when you talk about the 'Arab world' in today's terms? Innovation and brotherhood certainly don't come to mind. I think that this loss of life affirming practices is what Mike is referring to.

Thanks Anon A. Mus, I totally agree with what you are saying, I do respect Mike and his views. But sometimes I differ with him when it comes to branding the victims terrorists or using some questionable phrases like Islamo-fascists. it means nothing and it blurs reality and facts. The Palestinians have been suffering the longest occupation in history. They have stupid corrupt leaders, most of the time it is because of selective elimination by Israel.Hamas is not Al Kaida, so is Hizbullah, creating a big name like Islamo-fascists is merely obstructing real solutions to tackle terrorism in its roots.

***** branding the victims terrorists *****

I didn't brand the Palestinian people "terrorists."

The al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades are officially branded "terrorists" by the United States, the European Union, Canada and others because they use suicide bombers to deliberately kill civilians. Here is a list of their suicide attacks.

If suicide attacks on civilians doesn't make someone a terrorist, then I don't know what does.

***** Islamo-fascists *****

I've always liked the term "Islamo-Fascist" and felt that it helped put into context what organizations like the Taliban and Al Qaeda are all about.

Here's my dictionary's definition of fasism:

fas·cism (făsh'ĭz'əm) pronunciation
n.

1. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

Al Qaeda and the Taliban certainly want to and have established such systems of governments.

One component of fascism is that this "belligerent nationalism" is based on hatred of the "other" -- rather than "the other" being other races, it's other religions. That's the only difference.

It's not perfect, but I'm not aware of a better term. Here's Hitchens' defense of "Islamofascism."
