I hardly ever agree with what Egen says on his blog, but this - this is right on the money. It is completely correct to day that newspapers are redundant, but it's important to realise also that in their death, or at least their transition to weekly publication, good will come not just because they are extremely environmentally polluting, but because the pressure for all those tiny journos to say something intelligent every day leads to wild manipulations of the truth. Every *single* time I've read an article in a daily paper that I happen to have some inside knowledge about I despair: the article is invariably biased, usually very inaccurate, often skips important facts, and in some cases just makes stuff up to sound better ('cos after all, who's going to care tomorrow?). I look at the rest of the paper and wonder whether every other article in it is the same, and it probably is. Ditch the dailies - they're just trash.
You must be very masochistic, if you "hardly ever agree" with this blog and keep coming back!
But seriously, I don't even remember when the last time was when I read a printed newspaper. It has already been dead for a while. No wonder, Washington Post has been begging people to just pay for the Sunday paper and they'll deliver rest of the week for free.
I subscribe to the local newspaper . . . for my 77 yr old mother-in-law. What's amazes me is the lag time between news on the Internet and news in the newspaper. I read her newspaper and think "Knew it already. Old News. Was on their website last night."
The paper version may die out, but the Times Reader online is "star wars" cool. Check it out doubters.
I usually agree with what Mike says (I especially liked when he joined langalist for a little bit), but I don't here. I read more online than I do in the newspaper, but I still like to get my local paper on the weekend. I don't have time to read it during the week and they are pretty thin anyway (plus I read their online web site during the week). On the weekend, I enjoy sitting down with a paper and reading it. It is the same with reading a paper book versus reading the story online- I prefer paper. Plus on Sunday, I like to see all the local advertisements. The biggest thing that I hate about the newspaper is that it wastes paper/trees (even though I do recycle).
Sorry, Mike, but you're waaaay off the mark here. You're writing from a car-based environment. I've been taking public transit to school and work my whole life in New York and DC, and I don't think I've spent a day commuting without the New York Times or the Washington Post printed editions. In major cities, that's a huge market, and it's what's keeping newspapers afloat. I also read the online versions of a dozen papers, sure--out of town papers I couldn't get in hard copy.
And there's no way a PC, cell phone, e-book or other electronic device could match the sheer tactile joy of a no. 2 pencil scratching out the answers to the NY Times crossword puzzle.
I read the New York Times online, and find it to be a great source of information. Perhaps you all are unaware that in addition to blogs, there is real information available on the web.
I have the paper delivered here in Indianapolis, and get the Times reader with the subscription-FREE. I pay $53.00 a month for the paper itself.
The problem with printed media is that they need to be TOO GENERAL for reaching a wide audience.
but the problem is that making TOO GENERAL news is useless for everyone, making them feel they have not enough.
$53.00 a month?? That's more than most people pay for broadband! There is no way I would pay more than about $10 a month for a single (general) news source!
BTW all those people bleating about how they love to read paper - read the article AGAIN and GET THE POINT, you bozos. He's NOT saying newspapers are not as good as the web - he's saying their existence is wasteful and damaging.
Really - this is a pretty sad indication of how we are destroying the planet: most of the comments here are along the lines of "Oh, but I quite like to read my paper." People - get a frigging' clue here! It's not about some little luxury you quite like!
