Starbucks Tests Free Wi-Fi In California

I told you October 11 about my prediction that Starbucks would offer free Wi-Fi within a year. Well, the prediction is happening... sort of. Starbucks is TESTING FREE WI-FI at some 1,000 Southern California stores (until October 31). I think this is a trial run for much wider free Wi-Fi. 10/26/07 UPDATE: A Starbucks representative contacted me today and said this: "We are not in fact testing free wifi in Southern California. T-Mobile HotSpot, in coordination with Starbucks, is now offering complimentary wireless connectivity at nearly 1,000 Starbucks locations through October 31, 2007 as a response to the wildfires in these areas." (props to djchuang.com and the ubiquitous Chris Pirillo)

Now if only they'd make the coffee free I might stop by for a visit. :)

T-Mobile always opens up the wi-fi network in disaster areas. I am pretty sure this extends to the whole T-Mobile wi-fi network (not just Starbucks).

They did something similar for the Katrina disaster.

This really doesnt have anything to do with "Free Wi-Fi at Starbucks" as the author seems to think.

Yes (thank you, all5n). This is not a test. This is a proactive effort on the part of T-Mobile to make its HotSpot network available to people who have been displaced from work or home by the fires so they can stay connected.
