New Game Like Madden Football, But Blacker

A new PC game shipping November 23 called BCFX (for Black College Football Xperience) is a lot like other 3D football games, except with HOTTER CHEERLEADERS AND COOLER MARCHING BANDS. The game tries to capture the unique experience of all-black college football games (using 40 of the 114 historically black colleges and universities in the U.S.). Like other games, you control extreme-action American football. But at halftime, you also control the band's drum major in a high-energy "battle of the bands." Here's the best part: The half-time music is performed by real black-college bands.

Wait, How in the world is this not being considered racist?

If we had a video game with no black people in it, the blacks would be screaming that we're racist. Isn't the reverse true?

When I first intended to blog this, I thought I would take an angle along those lines. But after reading more about it, I was won over by the project. The game isn't racist. Here's why:

* Historically black colleges and universities (HBCU) exist:

* These schools were created to provide higher education to black Americans, who were blatantly discriminated against at mainstream universities.

* The schools formed traditions (such as insanely cool marching bands) and sports rivalries that are a very real and unique part of American culture.

* Because of those traditions, the "experience" of attending an HBCU game -- especially one involving some of the more intense rivalries -- is different. A big part of the difference is the importance and centrality of the marching band performances during halftime.

The game tries to capture that real and actual experience of attending one of these games, and adds a secondary game in the form of marching band competition, which uses the same criteria the bands themselves use.

So this game isn't about race, but culture.

The reason there isn't an all-white version is because ... it would fall under the realm of fantasy football?

People calling the game racist are obviously morons. Who doesn't know there are historically Black Colleges and Universities? Who doesn't know why they exist? Only idiots don't know.

So HBCU's don't deserve to have a video game? THAT kind of thinking is racist.
