Google Earth Forces Navy to Fix Swastika Buildings

The U.S. Navy plans to spend up to $600,000 to modify 40-year-old buildings at the Navy's amphibious base at Coronado, California so they DON'T OFFEND USERS OF GOOGLE EARTH. From the ground, they just look like boring government buildings. But looking straight down -- like in Google Earth and Google Maps -- they look like swastikas.

That shape was in use long before the Nazis co-opted it. I wonder if there's any way to take it back from them.

I listened to a BBC podcast on this yesterday -- the interviewer talked to a Navy PR flack. The Navy's claim is that in the 1960s, they planned to build a single "L"-shapped building, but suddenly had budget for four. So some genius said just arrange them in a circle. As they were building it, someone discovered that the arrangement looked like a swastika. But because you couldn't tell from the ground, they decided to just to ahead and keep building it that way. And, in fact, for over 40 years nobody noticed. Then Google Earth came along....
