The 8 Secrets that Make Apple Number One
Apple's success is no accident, and it's not a passing phenomenon. Apple knows something that other companies don't. Here are the eight secrets that make Apple the best company in the industry:
Secret 1: Engineering supports design -- no exceptionsMost surviving consumer electronics companies know and use at least one of these secrets. But Apple is the only major company I can think of that employs all of them. And that's why APPLE IS NUMBER ONE.
Secret 2: Fewer is better
Secret 3: The experience is the product
Secret 4: The product is the product
Secret 5: You can't please everyone, so please people with good taste
Secret 6: Leave the past behind
Secret 7: Product names are important. Really important
Secret 8: Group affiliation is the driver

Comments:
One of the best articles I have ever read, explaining the phenomenon of Apple's success.
As an Apple partisan (I hate the term, "fanboy"), if Apple is smart enough to be able to produce a superior product, I had better be smart enough to buy one.
It isn't just about whether one can afford to buy a Mac. It is a matter of taste. Frankly, I have told some people over the years that they lacked the taste and intelligence to own a Mac. None understood what I meant, at least confirming their lack of intelligence.
You forgot the 9th --and most important-- secret: Steve Jobs.
Under Gil Amelio or Michael Spindler or John Sculley the company is just one of many, nothing special. In fact, they committed crimes against most of the 8 secrets you cite. Can you name all the variations of Mac there were at one time, from the Quadra on down? I can't; there were just too many.
Jobs not only cleaned up the product lineup, he also eliminated the Mac clones (reason 1A why I hate Apple), and he continues to be anti-choice (reason 1B), another reason why Apple is successful.
You can't get an iPod and NOT use iTunes and you can't build your own PC and install OS X. It's good to be a monopoly, isn't it?
Your article feared backlash from Apple and non-Apple lovers. Only a moron would crticize such an insightful piece. You certainly nailed that one. Now I'd just like to hear what S.J. thinks about your list. I wonder how many he'd agree with?
