U.S. Tech Centers Are Richest In Nation
Quick, what's the RICHEST BIG CITY IN AMERICA according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey? New York? San Francisco? Los Angeles? Ha! Try San Jose, which is part of Silicon Valley. The median household income there is $74,000 per year. And they don't call it "The Golden State" for nothing. The top three richest American cities (San Jose, San Francisco and San Diego) and the top two richest counties (Marin and Santa Clara) are all in California and all awash in tech wealth. The richest city outside of California -- Seattle -- is also a major tech area (and near Microsoft). What these stats don't tell you, however, is how high the cost of living is in these areas. You might make $100,000 a year in Silicon Valley, but if you want shelter, you'll have to shell out $700,000 for a run-down shack in a bad neighborhood. The secret to riches is to "work from home" for a Silicon Valley company, but live in Bolivia.

I lived 21 years in the San Jose area, last place was Los Altos. The traffic is horrible, if you live in south SJ the air polution is as bad as L.A., every thing cost more than just about anywhere, people are all stressed out, both wife and husband work to make ends meet. It is just not worth it. I moved to a small town in southeast Texas and love it. There are more cows than people, air is clean, no traffic, people are very frindley and I would not trade this for anywhere in CA, OR,Fl, or Az.
I was born and raised in SJ but have lived in the Boston area for over 13 years. I still visit family in CA often. There is NO WAY I would move back. It's way overpriced and overbuilt. I still get sticker shock when I go to the grocery store and mind you Boston is not a cheap place to live either. The quality of life here is so much better in spite of our traffic, crime problems and expenstive real estate. And to what david said; my relative just paid $1.2M for a fixer upper ranch house in Palo Alto. Talk about making ends meet. Yikes.
