Rumor: New Dune Movie In the Works

A vague rumor is RIPPLING THROUGH THE MOVIE-BLOGOSPHERE that "someone" at "some studio" is getting close to a deal to make another movie based on Frank Herbert's novel, Dune. This could be great news if true. The novel is fantastic, and screams for a movie treatment. But the David Lynch movie sucked, and the Sci Fi Channel mini-series was generically bland.

The spice must flow. Shai-Hulud requires better treatment then the Lynch Di Laurentiis debacle of the 80's.

I'm getting giddy here...

I beg to differ on your opinions of the original Dune movie. Considering the technical limitations of the time, I think it remained faithful and conveyed the atmosphere of the book well. Hell, Captain Picard was in it, and Al from Quantum Leap!!!! lol. The recent mini-series remake struck me as nothing more than a direct copy of the original film, whilst failing to convey the same atmosphere.

Personally, I don't know if I'd like another remake. It'd have to be something special.

Still, to each his own - I love films like This Island Earth, too.

What a waste. There are other great stories that deserve a treatment, like Harlan Ellison's I Robot screenplay, or the Foundation series, or other authors I'm not recalling. Or if you're stuck on Dune, there are other novels besides the first one. I liked both of the Dune treatments myself; another seems pointless.

Regardless of the past remakes of this story I think that another remake would be awesome if done right. It would have to go past Children of Dune. The Golden Path must be explained not just left with Leto running through the dunes of Arrakis. If it is done right I'm all for it. Muab'dib should be a house hold name.

Every great story can endure multiple treatments (e.g., "Mutiny on the Bounty", "Batman", "Star Trek", "Dune", "Titanic", etc.). Yes, even "Foundation" is rumored to have a film treatment in the works, so why not another "Dune", especially if the director can bring fresh insights to the presentation of the material?
