UK 'Big Brother' Cams Now 'Improved' With Audio

"You there! Pick up that fag butt!" (Translation into American: "Pick up that cigarette butt") The UK can't find any more space to install surveillance cameras, so authorities there are improving the ones they've got with LOUDSPEAKERS. Whenever someone does something illegal, whoever is watching can harass them about it on the spot. I think this would be OK if citizens could also put loudspeakers on the cameras that watch Parliament or Congress. "You there! Stop shamelessly pandering to the pharmaceuticals lobby!"

uh ...no. that would only follow if what was happening in parliament/congress was illegal.

By that line of logic, citizens should be allowed to arrest police officers for doing their job.

The only reason selling out the lives and health of the public to benefit the pharmeceutical lobby (per my example) isn't illegal, is that the lawmakers are the ones who make the laws. It should be illegal.

Why do we so quickly forget that in a Democracy, the government is supposed to work for us, not the other way around.

We are actually not a "democracy" here in the US. We are a Republic, you know, "...and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands, one nation, under God indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." These cameras on the street corners with audio are definitely defying people's liberty, and I don't see much justice in it. I agree, if we are going to have cameras in this country, they should begin in the White House (every room), the Congress (all rooms), and the Supreme Court (all rooms there, too). Have you read "1984"? The similarity is beyond coincidence. I don't know who "Big Brother" is, but I don't want him watching me! The LORD God will do just fine in that department, thank you.

I don't think modern industrialized, English-speaking countries resemble 1984 at all. These cameras are largely supported by public opinion. The cameras in our homes are the ones we place there out of exhibitionism. More importantly, governments don't and can't maintain any kind of monopoly on information -- in fact we're drowning in information and nobody cares about it. Look to "Brave New World" for literary prescience into the world we've created for ourselves.
