Save the Whales! (With Swimming Robot)
Defence Research and Development Canada has created a WHALE BODYGUARD ROBOT that protects whales from ships. The intelligent torpedo swims around in the ocean, listening for and locating pods of whales. When it occasionally surfaces, it uses radio waves or -- barring that -- a satellite phone, to "phone home," and report whale locations so ships can avoid the area. The robot's batteries last a month per charge, but they're working on a robot that can swim autonomously for five years. The whale bodyguard robot is based on the Slocum Glider made by Webb Research.

Comments:
That'll work great until some enterprising whale hunters hack the data and use it to more efficiently kill the whales.
Good point...
