New Zealand Hails Breakthrough In Cheap Solar

Nanomaterials Research Centre eggheads at Massey University in New Zealand have come up with a revolutionary new solar power technology that is FAR CHEAPER -- one tenth the cost! -- better for the environment and more functional at low-light conditions than conventional solar technologies. The technology is based on organic compounds found in nature, including chlorophyll and even HUMAN BLOOD.

This is a 17 year old invention by Grätzel and O'Regan (Nature 353, 737 (1991) ) with just a different dye. Porphyrin dyes have been used for a long time in these cells. I am utterly amazed at how much coverage this is getting. P.S. the image you are showing is from a German company (Schott Solar) that has been making dye cells with porphyrin dyes for quite a while, not from the New Zealand researchers. You can see the image on p.35 of one of Grätzel's presentations. It likely is copyrighted by them.
