Only In Shanghai: Purple Mutant Space Potatoes
Trendy Shanghai restaurants are serving french fries and other foods made with PURPLE MUTANT SPACE POTATOES. Called "Purple Orchid Three," the potatoes are grown with seeds mutated by cosmic radiation aboard a Chinese spacecraft. And, no, I'm not making this up... (UPDATE: The spuds pictured above are not, it turns out, Mutant Space Potatoes, but ordinary Earth-bound potatoes that happen to be purple. If anyone spots photos of REAL Mutant Space Potatoes, please let me know and I'll post them here.)

Comments:
those are called purple peruvian potatoes and they are nothing new, nor are they mutant, just another breed of potato
If I’m not mistaken, and I don't think I am, those purple potatoes are not in fact the result of any radiation experiment or space travel. They are (at least in this country) called Blue Kongo (Blå Kongo) and are sold in many grocery stores. They have been grown in this country since sometime in the thirties, and I'm sure they are grown in many other countries as well. They make a very interesting mash, or a cool potato sallad with some yellow or white ones.
what those two other guys said before I could...
Apparently he is making that up.
Now now, I've never seen these before either. Remind me a bit of taro actually.
