Wait! Don't buy Windows Vista!
Unless you've recently emerged from a coma, you know the consumer versions of Microsoft's new Vista operating system ship Tuesday. Over the next few weeks, NBA star LeBron James will try to convince you to move to Windows Vista as part of Microsoft's massive ad campaign. I'm here to talk you out of it. JUST SAY NO to LeBron James and Windows Vista -- for now. Here's why:
1. Vista is incomplete
2. Vista is expensive
3. Vista wants a new PC
4. Vista is time-consuming
5. Windows XP isn't obsolete
6. Vista may be the best reason yet to buy a Mac

Comments:
I like how it's bad that if you want to use the Aero UI and need a little bigger video card, that it NEEDS new hardware, yet you go on to suggest purchasing a Mac which CAN'T (legally) run on a machine not built and grossly overpriced by Apple. I hardly doubt MS does too many retail sales, rather a majority of their money comes from the OEMs.
I've personally used Vista (RC1) and even at that state I was very happy with it. Some people just won't be happy until they can make a MS product look like junk
I experienced installing Vista_5342_32bit_Main_Staged_DVD_EN (Beta) on a 2 years old Laptop (Which is going to be kept for two more years) and I was left with a crippled system.
Some hardware drivers weren't installed and none could be obtained by HW vendor, neither there was any plan for vista one.
Vista would run troublesome on my system, slow and unfriendly.
In a nutshell "just crippled"
I went back to XP and very relieved that I didn't have to put up with so much day to day hassles.
I believe, if one is happy with his/her current system should not take the burden of buying whole lot of latest equipment in order just to have vista. Even then there most likely wouldn't be any guaranty that the new equipment would be problem free for some time, as Mike Elgan explained.
I enjoyed how Mike summarized and touched each topics in stages, I never thought about it that comprehensive before I read his article.

I assume you haven't actually *used* the OS at all, or apparently read anything about the *major* underlying architecture changes that have happened in Vista? Surely its just UI changes, right? Who wants to pay for that....

oh, wait, there are a few other changes....
1. XP is incomplete too. They are still releasing updates for it, after all.
2. For the Home Premium, you are paying around the same cost you did for XP. If you bought a computer with XP on it, you still paid for it, and you will likely be the type of person buying a new PC with Vista on it, rather than trying to upgrade anyhow.
3. 4GB is the sweet spot? I have used Vista a bit, with 2GB memory I didn't have any problems, and I do use my system quite heavily. IMHO 2GB is the sweet spot for windows XP, for the type of use I use it for, and it worked fine for Vista too. That said, you certainly won't be able to run it on a system purchased more than a few years ago, and even on some of those where you stuck with 512MB memory, you will have issues. Pixel Shader 2.0 is relatively old, and not an unreasonable requirement, as well a decent sized hard drive for search indexing shouldn't be.
4. For doing what most people do, Vista is no more time consuming than XP, and potentially less time consuming. Vista has the best upgrade process ive ever seen (you can "un-upgrade" if you don't like it), as well as (by far) the easiest install process.
5. Naturally, a prior OS doesn't become obsolete the day a new OS is released. This is a completely useless statement. The word "Duh" comes to mind....
6. I thought you were complaining about how Vista required a new hardware investment and was overpriced? Hmm, those don't really seem to jive well with this argument. If you think Microsoft OS upgrades are expensive, look at how often the MacOS upgrades are coming out, and then take a look at their price tag....
I will be waiting on Vista until nvidia releases a stable driver for my video card, but everything I've done with Vista thus far has been completely enjoyable, and quite stable. Look at the price tag on a copy of XP Pro (which is about comparable to a copy of XP Home Premium), and see how much more expensive Vista is?
Misinformation abounds on the internet in regards to technologies that people don't research. Don't get too caught up in it.
I would not use Windows Vista.
I was a beta tester for it for 10 months on vista
and loaded it on a Pent 4,, 2.8 ghz with 3 gigs of ram.
Many programs will not run on it like zone alarm, nero will crash it,ez cd creator will give u an error loading and driver support is a nightmare and get this all you Yahoo chatters you will NOT have voice in the chatrooms or in a conference ,only a small amout of virus scan programs will work on it.
VISTA IS A MEMORY PIG.
I use a old school version of windows xp that I got from collage back in 1992 it has NO activation and Registration is optional and I can load it on every pc that I own But will not sell the pc with the os on it.
I took that original cd with no service pack and downloaded Nlite and slipstreamed service pack 2 in to it and all the updates up to 2/20/2007 and it passes the Genuine Advantage on the update site every time.
Microsoft says they own the Windows software that we put on our pc,s.well I paid for mine at the school and where I come from you pay for something and have proof u paid for it,that it is yours and if someone tells you different they have an ass beating comeing.
I paid for the windows xp corp cd with a new key and its mine.
Windows Vista is another operating system that is horrible like Windows Millenium was.Just remember,Lock up's , blue screens, safe mode,un install the programs that crashed if you can and bend over for Bill Gates to get Your End Users shaft Agreement.
Have we not given Bill Gates enough money?
I say patch your original windows xp cd,s with all the updates and Just Say No to Windows Vista and to Bill Gates.

this is so true my new laptop can with vista and it only took me like 15 min to start "hating" it and an other 30 before i installed xp. give them time to work out the bugs and do away with all the bullshit stuff and it could be a good os. but if you can afford it go buy a mac with OSX
