In Real Life, PC Is Cooler Than Mac

Comic and singer-songwriter John Hodgman is wrecking the premise of Apple's famous "Mac vs. PC" ads. In the ads, Hodgman plays the PC, and actor Justin Long plays the Mac. Apple ads portray Hodgman's PC as a boring, idiotic schmuck and Justin Long's Mac as an interesting creative type. It turns out that Hodgman is actually a very charismatic, funny, intelligent, creative and interesting person, showing up in podcasts, on TV, on blogs, in magazine articles, on bookshelves and elsewhere and getting rave reviews. Hodgman is becoming more famous for his extracurricular activities than he is for the Mac ads. An unsupportable and irresponsible Raw Feed poll shows that 90 percent of computers users would prefer to hang out with Hodgman compared with, say, 6 percent with Long. (Hmmmm. That sounds familiar....)

Funny that you should post links to the places where JH appears, to justify your point, yet no link or proof of the poll.

Hmmmm...how typical of a Wintel user.

Windows Zombie says 'No sense of humor...How typical of a Mac fanboi'

oblivious to the fact nothing in the article or his post had anything funny in it. Oh wait...this is funny to Windows zoids? Wow what a witty bunch you all are.

I guess it went 'whooosh' right over the top the irony of Hodgeman using macs...in a blog called ' In Real Life, PC is Cooler Than Mac.'

Gotta admit you PC users are a funny bunch.

You don't have to find the post funny to realize that this:

*** "An unsupportable and irresponsible Raw Feed poll shows that... " ***

Is not meant to be taken seriously. The person I was responding to was asking for "proof of the poll." It's a joke!

What I have discovered in my 15 years of commenting on technology is that if you write a headline that *appears* in any way to favorably compare PCs to Macs, some usually huge number of Apple fans will be unable to actually read the content of the piece, and will critize the post, regardless of what it actually says.

There will be more.

Looks like somebody's trying to conceal a lack of wit by jumping on the elitist Mac bandwagon! Don't worry little fella. I'm sure you're the smartest boy in class.

(Sorry, Mike, but I had to have a little fun and poke the bear, too.)

Talk about funny, I just played with Windows Vista in Paralells on my Macbook....What a pathetic joke of a wanna-be OS. God, I love being a Mac user.

I'm a Mac user, and I think it not only pretty obvious that Hodgman is way cooler in real life, I'm also starting to like him more than the Dodgeball-guy in the commercials too. He's funny, and I want to watch him more than I want to watch the "Mac".

The last WWDC had a great opening video with Hodgman telling all the Mac developers to take the year off and not do any work. Brilliantly delivered.

The Mac is my platform of choice, but Hodgman is defintely the guy with whom I'd want to hang out.

One of the secrets of advertising is not to take it too seriously. Apple is not advertising for the current computer user-- Wintel has them sewed up, but for future ones. Usually, it takes years for advertising to effect consumer choices. That is why companies change their advertising at their peril.

Look at Campbell's soup; they have been playing the same ad for fifty years, "Mmmmm Mmmmm, Good." And it still draws people to it.

The ideal person that the current Apple ads is aiming at is in High School, but he won't be there for long. The Mac Guy is just perfect for him. Wasn't that what you wanted to be like when you were 15? Cool and popular?

I'm a mac user who is ofetn suprised at the vehemence with which other mac users take the bait, even tho I can feel my own hackles rise--don't diss my 'ware dude.

I think for tech savy PC users it is a utilitarian thing while for mac users it is utility plus style plus grace...

can't we all just get along?

but I still say PC stands for Perpetual Crisis

Leaving out the obvious factoid that Hodgman is -of course- a Mac user IRL clearly shows that this post was intended to rile Mac users. A time honored recipe to increase traffic. (See: John C. Dvorak)

Sad, really...

Of course JH uses a Mac...would ya think that part of his compensation for being in the ads would be the biggest, baddest Mac Apple makes? Duh.

And Win vs OSX...get a life. 95% of us like what we grew up with, and "the other OS is crap." Truth is, they are rather identical except for the UI and bundled app selection.

I'm a big Mac user and I agree - Hodgman is very funny as a comedian. I discovered him a couple of years ago and always look forward to anything he does.

I didn't take this post as a rip on Macs or Mac users.

Mac fans, like many other fans of things, have a mix. And there are certainly a fair share of defensive, antagonistic ones like the first commentor here.

Then again Mike, your choice of spelling "fanboi" in the comments can be considered antagonistic too.

Instead, why not look at the inntent of this post for what it says? Look I like alot of what Tom Criuse characters in his movies. BBut I certainly can tell his real-life personality is quite a bit different than that.

I understand that.

The thing is, this post has *nothing* to do with computers. It's about an advertising campaign centered around the creation of a character played by an actor who, in real life, is becoming famous for being the opposite of that character.

Maybe Apple will someday cast Linus as the choice they seem to enjoy ignoring: Linux. Which is also one of my biggest pet peeves about these ads:

"Hi, I'm a PC."

No you're not. You're a Windows PC. There are Linux PCs, BSD PCs, and Solaris PCs too. And they share a lot of the advantages of OS X: invulnerability to viruses (for the home user) and amazing stability. Only for free. They even both have enthusiastic fan bases.

Still, Windows and OS X both treat the user like a complete newbie, especially when it comes to error messages. You can tell a lot about a person by what OS they use, I suppose.

I think most people knew John Hodgman before the mac ads, from his book or work in the New York Times magazine. Ergo, the mac ads would be his "extra-curricular activities," and not his writing etc...
