New GPS Gadget Tracks Your Dog

A new GPS device helps you keep your dog from WANDERING OFF and, if he does, find him. Called RoamEO (the name implies that it's targeted at male dogs who wander off to find bitches, doesn't it?), the gadget includes a GPS collar for Fido, and a handheld unit with a display screen showing the dog's location for you. One cool feature is a "GPS Fence" -- you key in the virtual fence, and if the dog moves beyond it, you hear an alarm. Unfortunately, the unit only works if the dog is no more than one mile from the handheld -- with perfect line-of-site. Beyond that, and he's gone for good.

I'm reading this right after we got a call that my in-laws dog had run off again. Might be something that would be useful to them.

You should check out geminitracking.com they have a great GPS and cellular tracking device called the Gemtek for tracking kids. I just bought one and it works really well.

This review is inaccurate when it states that if your pet goes beyond 1 mile it "Is Gone". The truth is the system remembers the last known position of the dog. As you travel to that position more often than not the pets location is reaquired and you will be able to continue to track. Also using standard grid searching patterns will more often than not locate the pet and re-aquire the collar.

The "Line Of Site" requirement is also somewhat misleading. While hills and such can reduce the range by as much as a quarter mile...the system does not require line of site to work. It is primarily GPS based and while the radio function on it works off the MURS band even that does not require line of site.

The unit also works on any pet 30lbs and up due to the size of the collar. Although it is much small than other units out there...it is still too large for small pets.

It is also the ONLY unit out there that does not require any monthly fees, so while the up front cost appears to be greater than other units out there...it is actually less up front and MUCH less over the lifetime of your pet.
