Sudden Rise In Comment Spam Hits Blogs

I get occaisional attempts by spammers to post spam as comments on The Raw Feed -- typically I get an average of maybe one per day. I "moderate" all comments -- I have to approve them before they're posted -- so I catch and delete them all. However, in the past two days, the average has gone from one to 20 or so. I thought it was just me, but John Dvorak POSTED on his blog that he got a sudden influx of comment spam slipping through his devenses. Bloggers, is this happening to you, too? UPDATE: Check the comments. This is clearly a trend. Anyone know what -- or who -- is causing it?

Comments:
Definately. Over on a message board I frequent - Digital Press - http://www.digitpress.com - there is a section for personal blogs which all include both comments for each post as well as something called a Shoutbox, a space where you can leave a short message on the front page of someone's blog. The shoutboxes of many of the blogs have been getting spammed more and more lately. The moderator has attempted to put up patches to stop the problem, but so far, the only complete solution has been just to set the Shoutbox to register users only.
So it is definately happening elsewhere.
There has been a big time jump on spam comments on our blog. We use Akismet plugin for wordpress and it works great. I have noticed that spammers are trying to submit what appears to be a legit comment, then they start sending spam hoping the previous comment put them on an approved list for commenters.
Here too... went from 1 or 2 to 20-40/day.
I got three yesterday. Typically I get about one every couple days, so considering the popularity of my blog (or the lack thereof) I would consider that pretty significant.
Heh. I'll knock you back by an order of magnitude or so... On Techdirt, we normally get 800 - 1200 comment spams a day (mostly caught by our spam filter). On Sunday alone, we got well over 4000 (again, mostly caught by the spam filter).
Not sure what the spammers are thinking, since their spam never actually shows up...
So, yeah, comment spam is shooting up.
Yes. I have a teeny blog with 20-40 visits a day and few comments and yesterday there were three and all linked to websites selling one thing or another slightly related to the topic posted.
They are obviously now paying folks to google blogs and post canned spam (easily bypassing the spambot blockers) at blogs that have related posts. From the look of the referrals I see in my sitemeter stats, this would seem to be the case. All three came in via google.
Even the guestbook on my Yahoo Geocities website has started getting 3 to 6 spam entries a day (mostly for cell phone ringtones)!
Mine has dropped to zero but I installed BadBehavior... so between that and Akismet I don't see anything.
I was getting pounded by comments from one IP address and finally had to add something to my .htaccess file to get some relief.

Me too - I've got comment moderation on, so they don't get through, but I'm having to wade through a LOT more of them as of late.
What we really need is a program that responds to spam with the message "I cosider your spam to be intruse=vie and am logging you to insure I never trade with you."
And they adds their name to a list.

Above was a just a joke, proving the point that I also get a random friends who offer those things in my blog. I thought they really loved my blog, but no, they are trying to sell me stuff.
