Thieves Use Bluetooth to Find, Steal Laptops

Thieves are using the Bluetooth feature on their cell phones to find laptops locked in cars in Cambridgeshire, UK. They simply scan for nearby devices as they walk past cars. When the phone finds one, they break into the car or the trunk to STEAL IT.

Hmm. First, I had seen a similar story a few years ago, and called bullshit at the time. There was no actual proof that this was happening.

Is there any proof this time? It doesn't seem like it (and I note the article you link to is already pretty old). In most cases, a laptop that's asleep is not broadcasting a Bluetooth profile, so this just seems incredibly unlikely.

I totally agree with mike, also if the phone gets a bluetooth signal, you cam never tell which car is it. The signal strength may be strong enough to go thru the car window or trunk, but then which one of those 2 cars has the laptop inside.
