San Fran Hit By Hotspot Laptop Theft Crime Wave

San Francisco is suffering a crime wave of laptop thefts from Internet hotspot locations, such as STARBUCKS. Thieves can easily choose which laptops to steal by looking in the window. Then they just walk in and grab the laptop, sometimes STABBING the owner before taking off. Two years ago, 18 laptops were reported stolen in this manner. Last year, 48. This year, the city is on a trajectory to get over 70 such reports.

Last year I had my laptop (a Pismo Apple) stolen right from underneath my feet while I was paying for my coffee at the Starbucks at the Ramada on Mission Street. I surmised that the thief had an accomplice. Although I shouted out the theft, nobody paid any attention to me; in fact, they seemed bemused or inconvenienced. The staff said that this did not happen often. They probably lied. They should warn people about the risk to their laptops in areas like this, esp. visitors who are unaware of the possibility of their laptops being stolen. Up to this moment, I had loved San Francisco. After the theft, my rose-colored view of this city was changed for ever and now I do not feel any imperative to visit this crime ridden city anymore.
