This is just silly. Each "pod" can hold a whopping 20 rounds. The web sites says that they rate of fire is only 6K/min. Who cares how fast it can shoot if you need to relaod after 20 rounds. Another waste of US taxpeyer money.

This is a new and interesting technology. Like all new technology it will improve over time. It took a while for the machine gun to evolve and so will this.

At this point is would be impractical to use against human targets because:
It is very expensive
Probably reasonably difficult to maintain
No military at present are qualified to service or operate it.
As far as the invasion goes, I think everyone needs to relax. The bad guys went to jail or were killed. The innocent people were saved. And the only people over there bitching are the ones who have something to hide or were profitting from Saddam's Regime.
In addition, I think it would be difficult for President Bush to go into another country(Iran) without tangible proof of illegal weapons or terroist presense.

This is listed as an 'area denial system' - a replacement for minefields. No need to restart the religious debate on landmines, please. The system can be set to fire various combinations of ammo at various rates, which would be quite handy.
Think that your barrier plan now includes the ability to fire smoke or warning shots to scare off non-combatants, and then follow it with rapid HE for anyone unwilling to take the warning.

Since nobody else has gotten around to mentioning this, this is an urban legend. .50 caliber weapons are entirely legal to use on human targets. And are routinely used for precisely that by every military force.
In case you guys havent noticed, the US is not fighting 'traditional' wars anymore. It's armed forces are being mobilized and trained to fight terrorist and sub national groups. These groups are often not very well funded, and as such use older military technology that can be picked up cheaper on the black market or trafficked in from somewhere over their borders.
A traditional war will not have much in the way of mortar fire, but terrorist groups routinely use mortars. As such, I am all for the US spending millions on something that can protect the lives of our military fighting terrorists overseas. Even if it just saves one life, it's enough.
A gun, in whatever form, is just a mechanism for enforcing your will upon others. When was the last time someone forced their will upon you with favourable results?
i think if they decreased the rate of fire to maybe 500 bps, the thing would be more accurate, and still shoot the heck out of anything in it's way.

Please tell us… If it is the cost of a couple bullets then I am going to say that you are mistaken. I have been in the line of mortar fire...I am in Iraq right now. I saved an Iraqi soldiers life who's leg was blown off by a mortar. IRAQI soldier! Ive also seen American and British soldiers hit my mortars. Mortars are still heavily used to this day. Countries who get their technology from the old Soviet superpower use the mortars that were commonly used during the Cold War and WWII eras. Nations capable of Modern Warfare use a new kind of mortar fire, the Howitzer Antipersonnel and Antivehicular Artillery Weapon.

I love how so many people think that they know everything about politics and what is going on in the middle east. The Metal Storm guns are already in use. This is just a new one. They use them on boats, and they rarely miss, since they are like a laser beam of metal. Hence the company name Metal Storm.
They line up the rounds in the barrel, and shoot them all at the same time. Not sure how the other rounds get in there, but you end up with a solid line of rounds. I remember seeing a video a couple of years ago, and it chewed through 20 solid wooden doors in about 0.2 seconds. Each bullet in the tube is running so close to the other bullets it's in a perfect slip stream, getting a free ride through the air, which counters the impact from when it fires the bullet in front of it.

What's so bad about protecting against mortars at times of war? It'll save our troop's lives.
They need to steer away from projectiles having an individual propellant load. One source of propellant for every projectile would be safer for the user and manufacturer, and more efficient. BTW, 240k rpm is a hypothetical, ie. no reload, perfect conditions, etc.
Um, also, my 2cents, you know who still uses mortars, the United States Military thats's who. Also, by the "its ok to spell Iraq as Irak" theory, then we should spell France As Franse too since thats kinda the same right? NO, the letter that most correctly translitterates to english is a Q not a K. If you speak arabic at all. Also, I was in Iraq as someone else mentioned, and the mortrars are a big problem there. They suck at aim, but can get lucky from time to time, case in point, one of my buddies killed and another is in a wheelchair permanently. Where to begin? For those of you worried about the cyclic rate of this weapon, the standard used for weapons systems is rounds per minute. Even if it can only get off 100 rounds before being out of ammo, the standard is how many could it fire in one minute. This is seen across the board for weapons, so they have some area of comparrison. As far as needing to reload, the weapon is meant to intercept mortar rounds, much in the same fashon as the Patriot is used against missles. You won't need to reload right away, because there will be nothing left to hit after it is fired. If there is fear of multiple inbound, you would set up more than one weapon system. The radar/tracking system for this is capable of identifying, and prioritizing multiple inbound.
For you idealists that are worried about the welfare of the Iraqis, peace on Earth, the demise of President Bush, cut backs on military spending etc., why don't you go spend sometime in the real world? Get out of your parent's basement, and take a look around. The US is one of few nations that up holds the Geneva Convention. The Geneva Convention states that it is unlawful to hide soldiers, and arms in a place of worship, i.e. church, mosque, etc. Guess what? That is the first place that the insurgents go running after taking poc shots at the convoy bringing food to their fellow citizens. You small minded, ignorant children that belive everything that Fox says are going to be the demise of this country. You are not dealing with people that want to sit down at a table with you to work things out. They hate you. The biggest problem is the ammunition they shoot. US military already uses lots of depleted uranium for bullets (heavier/more mass than lead). Sure, it's low level radiation, but you put 240,000 rounds of it in one area and it adds up.

Hmmm... well AS a Marine who actually served in Iraq, I would just like to say that we sure could have used a few of these over there. Mortar fire is a day to day occurance at several outposts... I guess my thoughts are 1) if you value the lives of Marines, buy us a crapload of these things, hook 'em up to a remote control, and give them to the infantry. 2) if you hate Americans, yah... no shit this thing isn't going to meet with your approval... we're likely going to use it on you at some point. This technology has been in development for years by a privately funded research firm.
It has nothing to do with the President or anything going on currently. No taxpayer dollars have been used to create this technology.
They will be used to buy it. It will most likely receive a grant to continue the reasearch or money will be paid to manufacture and deploy the technology. This is not new money that is drained from your dollar the minute a deal is struck. Funds for defense are already set aside and this will receive a small portion of that money which is already the government's.
You people are so stupid. You complain so much and yet you show absolutely no grasp of how our government functions and has functioned since the day of it's conception.
If this protects our boys it is money well routed. Otherwise the funds will end up in another investment. Like I said, defense funds are pre-allocated. The money that is in defense funding will never leave defense funding.

While the picture doesnt really say much about the weaponry, one thing I do notice is that it is on tracks and given its overall dimensions relating to the size of the gun versus the length of track, the Super Gun would prove to be grossly inacrurate in the field. In fact, I would lay money on this not even being a working model. Don't always believe what you read, ignorance is far deadlier than any weapon.

Metal Storm is an actual technology invented by some Australian engineer guy in his part time in his backyard shed. He invented it a number of years ago and it was all over the TV current affairs shows in Australia talking about it's military application and how the US Govt were interested. The photo doesn't look much like what I saw on the TV but back then it was a pretty basic looking non-moveable prototype.

Could it be used to pull up next to a dock and blow the hell out of a warehouse? Sure, but there are far more effective ways to accomplish that. So, could this weapon be used on enemy soldiers? Yes, but we can kill them by the gross with small arms and short range explosives, and save a heck of a lot of money.

I am from Austria, if you know what that is, which I doubt when reading some of the more ignorant messages in here. I have never been in a war, and I hope I will never be. I respect the views of warriors and soldiers, but I also keep in mind that being one will most likely affect your judgement, since your own life is in danger. Thus, one is naturally more inclined to think of his aggressors as bad or downright evil.

Well CavMP31B30 this is most interesting. First of all, the US of A are a western nation which refuses to put their soldiers under public international law. So, if their soldiers violate the Geneva Convention, no one in the international community except America itself can do anything about it. This caused major uproar in Europe. No wonder, one should think that a nation never violating public international law wouldn't mind being controlled by international judgement. But hey, in the real world you are talking about, *every* nation engaging in warfare will commit war crimes! You can't tell me that there are no Americans torturing Iraqis. What is more, imprisoning people without an indictment is against human rights. Americans did (and do?) it frequently. Guantanamo Bay. Period. Makes you think, doesn't it? I guess it doesn't, because being smallminded is seemingly an American treat, for thinking that "Iraq" is spelled like that on every map in the world is like one of the most ignorant things i have ever heard. This is a joke, isn't it? Well, i represents the most negative view possible to have when looking at America. This post encompasses everything that people in Europe find repellant in America. I have to think that it is ironic, because i don't tend to believe in extremes, and this attitude *is* extreme. Well, anyways.. it has some points. Firstly, the war against Iraq is about oil, not terrorists. President Bush has a nice life in the US of A. He just has to point at something and say "terrorist", and - presto! - the public is favoring war. So he extends Americas international power. He mentions terrorists, and people give up their civil rights. So, he extends the governments internal power. And after that, people still brag about their freedom..which we only laugh about in Europe, because we have more freedom than the Americans have (in terms of privacy and civil rights). Actually, we can visit some places in the world and people will say to us "oh, good, you are not American". Happened to me. Why is that? Why is America becoming more and more unpopular? I can tell you: because war is bad. And because America doesn't care much about anything else than its own benefit. Truly, you can say that for most governments, but America follows this course most agressively (only concerning western nations).
And lastly (thx for all readers who followed me up to this point), terrorists are only attacking because there are some true social problems. Poverty, for example. They don't kill people because their god tells them to. Maybe their leaders influence their soldiers by promising them paradise, but that's not the cause of a war, only a means to prolong it or begin it. And, somehow, when i hear about Bush telling the world he is doing this (killing people, waging war) in a mission of God, i get a strange feeling that i heard that before...

This is an Australian invention that's at least 10 years old (subsequently bought with US money though). I remember reading that one of the applications could be to defend a warship from missiles by throwing up a "wall of lead". Don't know how feasible that is, but pretty interesting technology.
This gun can do alot of killing, but to those of you who didnt realise, its not meant to kill. Just like the similar guns mounted on boats, its meant to intercept fast, incoming projectiles. Be it a plane (crazy kamakazees taught us), a mortor, a scud, or a 747 on its way to hit the white house.

The idea that this weapon will be useful to shoot down Artillery or Mortar rounds is speculative. It is a speculation by the people who have the most to gain financialy from the adoption of this weapon, ie the makers of the weapon. It goes without saying that such a capability would be very useful if it can be done. Recall the Patriot missles used in first Gulf War didnt actually shoot down scuds. Mk2 Patriots are supposedly better. Jury stil out I think.
Its interesting to me that some of the comments proportedly from people who are currently serving or who have served in the Armed Forces seem to take at face value the idea that the people they are fighting in Iraq are terrorists.
The historical record shows Saddams regime which US sought to overthrow had little to no connection with international terrorism. The WMD's were never there, the pretext for war was while not strictly a lie, was not at all the truth.
I wonder what these servicemen and women would do, if some nation invaded US, destroyed the government, disbanded key institutions, and sought to impose a new way of life. How many of us would RESIST.
