U.S. Army To Test Super Gun

The U.S. Army plans to test next month a SUPER GUN from a company appropriately called Metal Storm that can shoot 240,000 bullets per minute. The gun has no moving parts. Among its many tricks, the gun can actually shoot down enemy mortar fire. I want one.

from TFA:

"This Australian/US firm's fully loaded barrel tubes are essentially serviceable weapons, without the traditional ammunition feed or ejection system, breech opening or any other moving parts. The technology uses the concept of numerous projectiles stacked in a barrel, in which each projectile has its own propellant load. The leading propellant can be electronically ignited to fire the projectile, without the resulting high pressure and temperature causing unplanned blow-by ignition of the following propellant load, and without collapse of the projectile column in the barrel. Metal Storm barrels can be effectively grouped in multiple configurations to meet a diversity of applications, are extremely reliable due to their lack of moving parts, and are capable of local or remote operation through a computerized fire control system."

Its a new techhnology relying on electricaly inducted current to detonate the caseless ammo in a sequential sequence.

The ammo is stored INSIDE the barrel, stacked end to end.

because there are no mechanical moving parts, the rate of fire can be very high.

google for metal storm's website, they explain everything.

I'm not sure its viable for personal hand held weapons, but used more as artillery defense, I think it could work well.

This gun isn't going to be used on humans. It sounds as if it'll be an anti-material weapon, ie: shooting down mortars, etc.

Much like the Barrett .50cal sniper rifle, I believe it's against law, geneva convention, whatever to be used on human targets, it's main purpose is to penetrate armor plates and stop tanks, trucks, etc.

Calm down...

If there's one thing that the US
has shown it's that they'll gladly
throw aside the UN and the Geneva
Conventions whenever it suits their needs. Sure it's not SUPPOSED to be used on humans but
that's like saying steak knives are only supposed to cut steak.

The US would not spend the kind of money this thing is going to cost to shoot down a few mortar shells (who the hell even uses mortars anymore anyways?!).

Now if the US were real smart they'd just throw all that money they just wasted into some good-ol'fashioned Propaganda...

This is a new and interesting technology. Like all new technology it will improve over time. It took a while for the machine gun to evolve and so will this.

That ROF is amazing though.

At this point is would be impractical to use against human targets because:

It is very expensive
Probably reasonably difficult to maintain
No military at present are qualified to service or operate it.

As far as the invasion goes, I think everyone needs to relax. The bad guys went to jail or were killed. The innocent people were saved. And the only people over there bitching are the ones who have something to hide or were profitting from Saddam's Regime.

In addition, I think it would be difficult for President Bush to go into another country(Iran) without tangible proof of illegal weapons or terroist presense.

Everybody just chill.

This is listed as an 'area denial system' - a replacement for minefields. No need to restart the religious debate on landmines, please. The system can be set to fire various combinations of ammo at various rates, which would be quite handy.

Think that your barrier plan now includes the ability to fire smoke or warning shots to scare off non-combatants, and then follow it with rapid HE for anyone unwilling to take the warning.

Since nobody else has gotten around to mentioning this, this is an urban legend. .50 caliber weapons are entirely legal to use on human targets. And are routinely used for precisely that by every military force.

In case you guys havent noticed, the US is not fighting 'traditional' wars anymore. It's armed forces are being mobilized and trained to fight terrorist and sub national groups. These groups are often not very well funded, and as such use older military technology that can be picked up cheaper on the black market or trafficked in from somewhere over their borders.

A traditional war will not have much in the way of mortar fire, but terrorist groups routinely use mortars. As such, I am all for the US spending millions on something that can protect the lives of our military fighting terrorists overseas. Even if it just saves one life, it's enough.

Mortars are still heavily used to this day. Countries who get their technology from the old Soviet superpower use the mortars that were commonly used during the Cold War and WWII eras. Nations capable of Modern Warfare use a new kind of mortar fire, the Howitzer Antipersonnel and Antivehicular Artillery Weapon.

And as a correction to everyone else, the poor ignorant SOB who posted the anti-american flame in this thread was not a hippie. Read a lot of the comments... thought I'd throw in my 2c.

The Metal Storm guns are already in use. This is just a new one. They use them on boats, and they rarely miss, since they are like a laser beam of metal. Hence the company name Metal Storm.

They line up the rounds in the barrel, and shoot them all at the same time. Not sure how the other rounds get in there, but you end up with a solid line of rounds. I remember seeing a video a couple of years ago, and it chewed through 20 solid wooden doors in about 0.2 seconds. Each bullet in the tube is running so close to the other bullets it's in a perfect slip stream, getting a free ride through the air, which counters the impact from when it fires the bullet in front of it.

They need to steer away from projectiles having an individual propellant load. One source of propellant for every projectile would be safer for the user and manufacturer, and more efficient. BTW, 240k rpm is a hypothetical, ie. no reload, perfect conditions, etc.

To those who say the world is a dangerous place, and believing in working towards peace is niaive. They are half right. The world _is_ dangerous because of attitudes like that. Regardless, believing in peace is the only option.

You don't need a crystal ball to see that if we don't work towards peace, it is only a matter of time before ever more destructive technology in the hands of the greedy, fearful and psychotic will inevitably wipe us all out.

It is natural to want power, and it is natural to want to defend yourself... but humans must eventually look beyond their first guy reactions and consider the true consequences. What kind of world are we working towards?

Where to begin? For those of you worried about the cyclic rate of this weapon, the standard used for weapons systems is rounds per minute. Even if it can only get off 100 rounds before being out of ammo, the standard is how many could it fire in one minute. This is seen across the board for weapons, so they have some area of comparrison. As far as needing to reload, the weapon is meant to intercept mortar rounds, much in the same fashon as the Patriot is used against missles. You won't need to reload right away, because there will be nothing left to hit after it is fired. If there is fear of multiple inbound, you would set up more than one weapon system. The radar/tracking system for this is capable of identifying, and prioritizing multiple inbound.

For you idealists that are worried about the welfare of the Iraqis, peace on Earth, the demise of President Bush, cut backs on military spending etc., why don't you go spend sometime in the real world? Get out of your parent's basement, and take a look around. The US is one of few nations that up holds the Geneva Convention. The Geneva Convention states that it is unlawful to hide soldiers, and arms in a place of worship, i.e. church, mosque, etc. Guess what? That is the first place that the insurgents go running after taking poc shots at the convoy bringing food to their fellow citizens. You small minded, ignorant children that belive everything that Fox says are going to be the demise of this country. You are not dealing with people that want to sit down at a table with you to work things out. They hate you. They want nothing more than to see your blood spilled on the dirt, so they can dance around. They kidnap innocent civilians, cut their heads off on video, and post it on the internet. They don't care what you think. I don't mean this to be true for all Muslims. It is far from that. Most Muslims are peacful, and want a chance to grow and thrive like everyone else. But a small percentage of them would gladly see every man, woman and child that is not Muslim die a gruesom death. Don't believe me, go walking through downtown Tikrit, or Bahgdad, unarmed, without an escort, preaching your BS peace rhetoric and see how long you last.

If the US was REAL smart they'd just take the money they're (OK, we're, I admit it) spending in Iraq and give it to the people who live there! That's a lot of money and I suspect they'd be our pals.

In the old days they (we) would just give money to people like the Shaw in Iran and have him steer the country in the direction we wanted it to go... that didn't work out too well in a lot of places even though it was more cost-effective than giving money to everybody.

"Death begets death" Yeah, yeah, and an eye for an eye makes for a blind world. What would you suggest? Sit around and let them kill your family? That way they could sleep tight without worrying that you would kill them? If you think violence is never the answer than what is? Sept 11th was an unprovoked attack on American civilians. How should we have responded? Asked nicely that they not do that again? Tell them that we would all convert? Here's the thing. These people hated us long before Desert Storm. This war started a thousand years ago. These finatics think that anyone that worships a different god is an infidel and deserves to die. As for Iraq, you go tell the Kurds that they should have tried talking to Saddam, and that that would have solved their problems.

Yes, the Geneva Convention does prohibit the unnecessary torture of enemy combatants. If you think putting panty hose on someone's head is torture, there is something wrong. As for the US being the savior of the world...
When they came for the Jews, I said nothing. When they came for the Blacks, I said nothing. When they came for the Hispanics, I said nothing. When they came for me there was no one left to say anything for me. The apathy the rest of the world showed towards the attrocities that were occuring in Iraq is appalling(sp?).

Next you will say that it is okay for Iran to wipe Israel off the map. That the rest of the world need not get involved.

:Sarcastic: Here's a great idea... maybe we should give the money that we are spending on the war effort to the people of Iraq. Then we can leave and let the people of Iraq be totally overthrown by terrorists. This is what all of you guys are saying. I totally support the war and President Bush. He knows what he is doing is right. What are we supposed to do... slap the terrorists on the hand and ask them politely to not attack us again. Yeah! That would work!

The biggest problem is the ammunition they shoot. US military already uses lots of depleted uranium for bullets (heavier/more mass than lead). Sure, it's low level radiation, but you put 240,000 rounds of it in one area and it adds up.

Bad news.

The biggest problem is the ammunition they shoot -- similar weapons currently in use fire depleted uranium. No single projectile is very radioactive by itself, but when you fire 240,000 rounds per second it adds up really quick.

Bad news.

Hmmm... well AS a Marine who actually served in Iraq, I would just like to say that we sure could have used a few of these over there. Mortar fire is a day to day occurance at several outposts... I guess my thoughts are 1) if you value the lives of Marines, buy us a crapload of these things, hook 'em up to a remote control, and give them to the infantry. 2) if you hate Americans, yah... no shit this thing isn't going to meet with your approval... we're likely going to use it on you at some point. Peace...
