Engineer Proves Speed Camera Error In Court

Engineer Bryn Carlyon was issued a TICKET by a traffic speed camera in Cardiff, UK. But he used multiple timed snaps by the camera, plus a little basic math, to PROVE IN COURT that he could not have been traveling at the speed on his citation. The case was dropped "due to insufficient evidence" and he received an apology from the Mid and South Wales Safety Camera Partnership, but Carlyon won't drop it himself. He's working to overturn the decision for the benefit of mankind: "I need the verdict to say that this was not dropped through lack of evidence -- it was dropped because it was a false prosecution," he told a local reporter.

You can't do this in the US, the camera manufacturers don't have to release any images to you other than the image used in the ticket. They claim that it would violate a trade secret. They've even gone to court to establish that you cannot subpoena their other images.

Wrong comparison - we should only consider the civilized world. In the US you could even invade a foreign country based on nothingness ;)

In Brazil one would be beaten up until he assumes that he was riding at 10 times faster than he actually was, and they would use some of your family members as hostages to make sure you don't screw things up... and if you tell that to anyone else you have the risk of getting them after your ass too.

That's why sri lanka sucks in comparison to North American and the civilized parts of Europe (mind you, that is pretty much all of it).

To the anonymous one who mentions the inability to subpoena images: what is your basis for this statement?

A quick note to all you Digg people complaining about linking to a blog rather than "the story": This is one of the weird things about Digg. This suggestion by Digg that you link to the story, rather than a blog that links to a story, assumes that each blog entry merely summarizes a single story. This is obviously absurd and inacurrate. Many blog postings bring together different stories and other elements and add unique opinion, perspective and personal observations totally unavailable to any of the the stories linked to in the blog.

In the case of the story above, the blog entry links to two incomplete stories, each containing information absent from the other.

The hostile Digg enthusiasts who posted nasty comments here would have Digg users link only to a single, incomplete story and leave readers without the benefit of a blogger's effort to track down additional stories and pictures that give the whole story.

Which raises the question: Why?

Digg could be so incredibly good if not for a few bogus weirdnesses, such the tiny army of people with way too much time on their hands going around flaming people who don't march in lock step with the misguided Digg suggestion that users link only to stories on mainstream media.

Why is the so-called civilized world still so full of people who use sticks and stones, fists, guns and foul language to express themselves?

Indeed. There are two links here assholes. Get your facts straight before you start cussing other people. Some blog posts are more informative than original articles, due to the crosslinking nature of the stories presented.

Please dont label all digg users by the actions of a few loudmouth idiots.

The majority would not care its linked to a blog, I personally now read several blogs that I would not of otherwise if it were not for digg.

Blogs/digg/slashdot etc.. are all part of the same phenomena these people just dont understand the cultural revolution and apparently have the attention span of a goldfish (yes i saw mythbusters episode)

It's not just Digg. It's internet trolls, (subspecies 2). They exist only to waste the time of productive members of society. They represent a strong case for eugenics.

yea theres no need to go nuts about the link, if you cant be assed to jump down one more link to read the story you want then thats lame. Also notice that Digg themselves provide an RSS feed of all the stories you have 'dug' only to have each link then link to the comments on Digg and not the story itself...

To the Person(s) speaking of "America" (I take it you mean the United States... half of the world is American)as uncivilized and full of people who use foul language and guns... thanks so much for your compliments! We do live this way and enjoy it very much. That's why our fathers left your "Monarchy" (insert laughter here) for the free world where we can curse, invade countries who tick us off, shoot and carry weapons, and pretty much do what feal like doing... thanks again for being completely off topic. PS: Surely you don't think that your miniscule little comments upset us? We're the SUPER POWER GUYS

Why do you automatically assume it was the blog host that posted his own story, and not just one of the blog's regular readers who saw it? The Digg poster doesn't even have a site listed under his profile -- if he was so gung-ho about snagging Digg visitors, you'd think he'd post it there, too. I doubt the blogger of this site posted the Digg story. Back off.

I'm sick of people getting worked up about linking to blogs. Blogs are fun to read and informative. If you discover the source of something, you should get credit for sharing it with the rest of the digg community. It's one thing when someone just writes this is a cool link and then links there story, but if someone takes the time to add their own commentary, then they should be the ones that get preferential treatment when it comes to commentary on the story. Think of it as giving them the right to be the number one comment in the comment stream. I wish people would quit complaining about this and learn to accept that the blogosphere is an informative part of the digg process. Without bloggers submitting these stories in the first place, there wouldn't be a digg effect.
