Stanford Team First In Grand Challenge
STANFORD HAS WON the 132-mile, $2 million 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge autonomous vehicle robot race -- unofficially. The Stanford Racing Team's "Stanley," a modified Volkswagen Touareg R5, finished with a time of six hours and 53 minutes. There was confusion in the blogging community and in the mainstream media about which car won because the web site showing results didn't stop the timers when entries finished. Though it was clear by early afternoon that Stanley was the only possible winner, organizers didn't immediately announce results because one car hadn't completed the course. Here comes the VIDEO!

Comments:
It's spelled Volkswagen.
No, it's spelled farfegnugen!
News channels haven't even mentioned this. Sigh...
Thanks for the spelling correction. I've updated it.
News channels haven't mentioned this because the race isn't officially over and the Stanford win isn't official. My story isn't that Stanford is the official winner, but that -- unless something really extraordinary happens -- they will be the winner when this thing is official concluded.
Stanford did not have the fastest time, they did cross the finish line first. I think the ended up second.
There's a bug in the software at the official site. Stanford did win by somtething like 15 minutes.
