New Laser Tech Lets You Write On Air - No Gloves

A prototype of a "Smart Laser Scanner" developed by Alvaro Cassinelli and fellow propellerheads at the University of Tokyo enables you to simply write with your finger on a wall or any other surface -- even in MID-AIR -- and what you write will hang there as light. The system, which uses laser beams, mirrors and sophisticated software, follows your finger wherever it goes, shining light on it -- and remembering where it traveled. Cassinelli says the technology could be built into a tiny chip and embedded in a cell phone. I want one.

Correction: the light doesn't hang in the air... that's just time-lapse photography of an illuminated fingertip.

I'm about eighty percent sure that's completely impossible. You can't make light "hang" in midair. Not without something in the air to interact with the light, dust for example.
The pictures look exactly like ones I've seen done with time lapse photography and a flashlight. Better luck next time.
